MESSAGING GUIDE

Keep opt-outs clear. Keep messages useful.

Opt-out instructions help recipients control the messages they receive. Neopolis can add Reply STOP to unsubscribe. automatically to your outgoing customer messages.

Choose the right footer setting

Every message: include instructions on each outgoing message. This makes the option consistently visible, but the extra characters can increase SMS charges.

First outbound / opt-in message, plus periodic reminders: include instructions on the first outgoing message, after an opt-out followed by renewed consent, and on the next message when your resend interval has elapsed. The default interval is 30 days. Neopolis does not send a separate text just because an interval has elapsed.

The interval is a product setting, not a universal compliance rule. Follow the requirements of your registered messaging campaign, provider, destination country and message type. Choose more frequent instructions where those requirements call for them.

Consent comes first

A footer does not provide permission to text someone. Obtain consent for the particular business and messaging purpose, keep evidence of it, and identify your business clearly. For recurring programs, explain the expected frequency, support options and applicable charges in the enrollment confirmation. These are separate from the opt-out footer.

Honor requests to stop

Neopolis blocks ordinary outgoing messages after a recorded opt-out. The final unsubscribe confirmation is handled separately and does not receive an extra footer. Review incoming conversations for requests expressed in natural language, and record those opt-outs too; a recipient should not have to use one exact phrase to stop receiving messages.

Understand SMS charges

SMS is billed in segments. A standard GSM-7 message fits up to 160 character units in one segment; longer messages typically have 153 units per segment. Unicode messages generally allow 70 units in one segment and 67 per segment for longer messages. Some symbols consume extra units. These limits apply to the complete text, including the footer.

For example, a 150-character message plus a blank line and the 26-character standard footer becomes 178 character units when all characters use basic GSM-7 encoding. That changes it from one billable segment to two. An emoji can change the encoding and increase the segment count further.

How Neopolis tracks the footer

Tracking belongs to each business and recipient number and is shared across web replies, Neopolis Connect, API sends, campaigns and automations. Queuing a message does not mark its footer as sent. Provider acceptance records the send; a later failure makes that failed footer ineligible for the next-send decision. “Footer sent” indicates submission, not guaranteed handset delivery.

Existing messages from before footer tracking was introduced cannot reliably prove that a footer was sent. The first eligible message after upgrading includes instructions again. Instructions already present in the message are retained; recognized STOP instructions are not duplicated.
